Protecting Our Pets When It Matters Most
Every year, thousands of house fires are started by pets—and many more pets are at risk of being trapped inside during an emergency. July 15, Pet Fire Safety Day, is a day to raise awareness, take action, and make sure our four-legged family members are protected when the unthinkable happens.
At DogStoreOnline, dogs aren’t just part of the family—they’re family. And just like we’d do anything to keep a child safe, we believe our pets deserve the same planning and protection.
🐶 Quick Facts About Pet Fire Safety
-
An estimated 500,000 pets are affected by house fires every year in the U.S.
-
Nearly 1,000 fires are started by pets themselves, often by knocking over candles or turning on stovetops.
-
First responders can only save pets if they know they’re inside—and that's where you come in.
🔥 How to Keep Your Pets Safe in Case of Fire
1. Place a Pet Fire Safety Window Cling
First responders rely on visual cues.
👉 A pet window decal or cling tells firefighters how many animals are inside and what type.
Place it near your front door or primary entrance, and make sure to update it if your pet count changes.
2. Secure Pets Near Entrances When Away
If you’re not home, keeping pets in areas near exits helps responders locate them quickly. Never leave pets confined near hazards like open flames or stoves.
3. Never Leave Open Flames Unattended
Pets are curious. Candles, stovetops, and fireplaces can quickly lead to disaster. Use flameless candles, and double-check the kitchen before leaving home.
4. Practice a Pet-Inclusive Fire Escape Plan
Make sure your family knows who is responsible for which pets in an emergency. Keep carriers, leashes, and supplies near exits for quick access.
5. Microchip and ID Your Pets
If a fire breaks out and your pet escapes or is rescued separately, up-to-date ID tags and microchips are essential for reuniting.
